The word thrift comes from Old Norse þrift — to thrive, to flourish. It had nothing to do with frugality. Over centuries it narrowed: from flourishing to saving, from abundance to careful management of scarcity. What was left of it became the thrift shop.
The title puts the original word back. Not Thrift. Thriving. And then the poem walks into the shop and looks around.
