Cozy Coupe
I drove with my feet on the ground,
inside something red and yellow and faced like a friend,
going nowhere.
I had seen it in a colourful magazine
at the university library.
My feet left the ground.
They had their reasons.
I called them excuses.
Then came the substitute.
It came with stickers —
a large S on the door.
Sports Mind, said the one on the hood.
I drove it like I meant it.
I drove it to the scrapyard.
I redlined it once.
First and last.
It roared.
The tyres screamed.
Now my children drive
the same red car, yellow roof,
feet finding the floor.
I watch them from inside
and do not tell them
it is pretend.
Not yet.
